"As part of my partnership with GE, I received coupons for my GE light bulbs. All opinions posted about my GE Lighting experience are my own."
There are so many organizations out there that help people in need. Charity is great but I believe in the old adage, "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish he eats for a lifetime." Educating and charity can be one in the same. If I had truly been educated about how important saving energy is, I would have done it a long time ago. Nobody ever took the time to teach me. This whole living green shift in my families life happened because I stumbled upon an article. I couldn't ignore the facts. Once the facts were placed in my hands I couldn't knowingly ignore it. It was funny because after that little things started happening to let us know we were on the right tract. One day when we stopped in to pay the electric they gave us a big blue bag full of items to help us save energy. One of those happened to be a box full of energy efficient light bulbs from GE. They are still up there today in several areas of our house producing light and saving energy! When the opportunity came to participate in the GE Lighting Champions For Kids project came up I knew I wanted to help shine the light!

My usual charity of choice is usually Catholic Charities. They help so many people in our area. But, this time I wanted to do something different. I wanted to focus on the education part of giving. I remember back around the same time period when we received that bag full awesome we also received a second baby car seat from the Cornell Cooperative Extension. Natalie was on the way even though Madeline wasn't even a year old. Yeah. It was kind of a hard financial time lol. They went through the whole process of making sure it fit in our car correctly and showing me the correct way to buckle a newborn. Even though I already had gone through it with Madeline I found out that I didn't know and neither did Alan. You could have knocked me over with a feather. Cornell Cooperative Extension is in every county of New York State. Their name explains it all. It's a extension of Cornell University. Their whole reason for existing is to help residents of these counties to do better. Take a look at what they are doing in a town juts 20 miles away from me! Looks like my girl's energy efficient light bulb donation will help out in a big way!
Whether it be balancing a check book, eating healthier or living sustainably. It's a charity but it isn't at the same time. They improve lives, local lives everyday. Once our financial health took a turn for the better we bought more CFL light bulbs. We aren't completely switched out but we are gaining! Our electric company even gave us the option to choose who we receive energy from. We had the choice of taking part of our energy from Niagra Falls vs all from the nuclear power plant. We pay more and it's only part of our usage but it's small changes like light bulbs and sustainable energy that help our environment.

| GE Energy Savings Calculator! Look how much I would save! Look how much CO2 I could prevent! |
The GE Energy Savings Calculator is awesome. It figures out if you switch all your light bulbs to halogen, CFL, or LED how much money you would save and how much carbon dioxide you would avoid. Take a look at mine. I didn't even know I had that many light bulbs around the house!!! It's a heck of a savings!
| We've been searching for a light bulb for our desk lamp. Walmart finally had it this time!!! |
GE Engergy Smart light bulbs are available in Walmart. We didn't have a hard time finding them. There is a whole aisle dedicated to light bulbs. I know my girls are young but I want them to learn about sustainability and giving right from the start. I took them to the store with me. Madeline is fascinated with lights. Everyday she tells me when the streetlight across the street turns on lol. I'm taking Madeline's impressionable 5 year old mind and Natalie's impressionable 4 year old mind and using it for good!!! Natalie always makes sure to turn out the lights when we go out of a room. She may even get a little enthusiastic and turn off the light while mommy is still using the potty lol. Do they fully comprehend? No. But they are starting to. That a light that I don't want to go out.
